Valuable information for buyers and sellers.

Last week, President Obama signed a bill that extended the $8,000 tax credit for first-time homebuyers, and also included a provision that allows eligible repeat buyers to claim a credit of up to $6,500. This is great news for first-time buyers who now have more time to close on a home, and even better news for current homeowners who can now also take advantage of the tax credit.
Review the following information to see if you are eligible to take advantage of the tax credit for current homeowners:
  • You have owned and used your current home -- or the home you are in the process of selling -- as your principal residence for five consecutive years out of the past eight years.
  • You sign a contract to purchase a new home by April 30, 2010, and close the transaction no later than June 30, 2010.
  • The home you purchase is $800,000 or less.
  • Your modified gross income is less than $125,000 for single tax payers or $225,000 for married filers.
